Photodynamic Light Treatment

Photodynamic light treatment (PDT), also known as photodynamic therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat various types of skin cancer. At Academic Alliance in Dermatology, we are proud to offer this innovative treatment to our patients.

PDT involves using a special light source that activates a topical medication — or photosensitizer— placed on the skin. This reaction leads to the destruction of abnormal cells.

Conditions Treated with Photodynamic Therapy

The FDA has approved PDT for the treatment of the following dermatologic conditions:

  • Actinic keratosis
  • Advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Barett esophagus
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell skin cancer

Treatment Process

There are many advantages to using cryosurgery to treat skin conditions. For starters, it is a non-invasive procedure with minimal scarring and discomfort. It often requires no hospital stay and may be done using local anesthesia or, in some cases, not at all. This makes cryosurgery an ideal choice for those who want to minimize downtime and recovery time. In addition, dermatologists are able to focus on precise treatment areas avoiding damage to nearby healthy tissues.

At Academic Alliance in Dermatology, our PDT team will first evaluate your skin to determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment. Typically, patients have had prior treatments that were not successful or were unable to undergo surgery.

Once it is determined that PDT is the best option, we will begin the treatment process. We will start by applying the photosensitizer to the area of concern. The light source will then be used to activate the photosensitizer, which destroys abnormal or cancerous cells.
