What is IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) lasers are a type of technology used in dermatology for a variety of skin treatments. These lasers emit a broad spectrum of light that can target specific structures in the skin, such as blood vessels or pigment, without damaging the surrounding tissue. This makes IPL lasers an effective and non-invasive option for treating a range of skin conditions.

IPL lasers are used in dermatology to treat a wide range of skin conditions, including:

  • Sun and age spots
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea
  • Broken capillaries
  • Unwanted hair
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Port wine stains

IPL Treatment Process

IPL lasers are often used in conjunction with other dermatological treatments, such as topical creams or microdermabrasion, to enhance their effectiveness.

The procedure typically involves the application of a cooling gel to the skin, followed by the pulse of the laser over the targeted area. The treatment is typically well-tolerated, with only mild discomfort reported by some patients.

Benefits of IPL Lasers

One of the key advantages of IPL lasers is their versatility. They can be used on a variety of skin types and tones and can be adjusted to target specific structures in the skin. This allows providers to tailor the treatment to the individual needs of each patient, resulting in more effective and targeted results.

IPL lasers are also a popular choice for cosmetic treatments, such as hair removal and skin rejuvenation. In these cases, the laser is used to destroy the hair follicles or stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in smoother, firmer skin.

IPL FAQs

How many IPL sessions do I need?

For IPL photorejuvenation, patients typically require 3-5 sessions, with results showing gradually over time as sessions are received. The number of treatments required for IPL hair removal varies based on which part of your body is being treated. However, on average, patients can expect it to take 3-6 sessions to achieve their desired results.

How long do the results from IPL treatment last?

With proper sun protection following IPL photorejuvenation treatments, results can last for years. Unlike laser hair removal, IPL hair removal is not permanent, but it does significantly reduce hair growth in patients. You can expect smooth skin for months after your IPL hair removal treatment, and you will only require occasional touch-ups after that to maintain your results.

Is IPL treatment painful?

Some patients have noted feeling slight discomfort when the ultrasound waves are delivered to their skin, so at our offices, we employ the use of a topical anesthetic to ensure that our patients have a pain-free experience. You may experience some redness or tenderness immediately after the procedure, but that usually clears up within an hour or so.

Are there any side effects of IPL treatment?

Though IPL is a common procedure and is considered very safe, there are still potential side effects, as with any treatment. Patients may experience skin redness and tenderness directly after receiving treatment, as well as bruising or, in some cases, minor scabbing/crusting. This is perfectly normal and, in most cases, very short-lived.
