Types of Chemical Peels and Why They Are Necessary

Our skin is constantly exposed to environmental toxins, sunlight, and other aggressors. Over time, these factors may lead to visible signs of aging, acne, sun damage, and other skin concerns. Taking precautions such as wearing sunscreen, using antioxidant serums, and getting regular skin checks may help slow the aging process and keep your skin healthy and looking its best. However, there may come a time when you need a more aggressive treatment to address certain skin concerns. This is where medical-grade chemical peels come in.

These types of chemical peels are only available through a licensed medical provider. A medical-grade chemical peel may be used to treat a variety of concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne, and uneven skin tones. If you have tried other treatments with little to no success, a chemical peel may help improve the appearance of your skin.

Types of Chemical Peels and Their Benefits

There are many different types of chemical peels on the market, so finding a medical provider who can help you choose the right peel for your skin type and concerns is essential. Here at the Academic Alliance in Dermatology (AAD), we offer several types of chemical peels, including Vitalize, Rejuvenize, and TCA peels.

Vitalize Peel®

Are you ready to achieve a more youthful appearance? The Vitalize Peel® from SkinMedica may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, this medical-grade chemical peel is terrific for those looking to address skin tone concerns, such as uneven pigmentation.

This peel works by using medical peeling agents such as salicylic, resorcinol, lactic acid, and retinol to lessen the effects of melasma, sun damage, and aging on the skin. One of the biggest draws to this peel is that you may start seeing results after just one treatment. However, for optimal results, we recommend a series of peels.

Rejuvenize Peel®

Let your skin shine with the Rejuvenize Peel® at AAD. Not only does this medical-grade chemical peel help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it may also diminish acne and acne scarring. Moreover, by using this peel, you may find a solution for your pigmentary irregularities and sun damage.

While you will be able to see noticeable results after just one treatment, it is recommended to undergo a series of treatments (three to six peels) for the best results. Your medical provider will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your unique needs.

TCA Peels

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are among the most commonly requested medical-grade chemical peels. TCA peels are available in different concentrations. The higher the percentage of TCA, the more intense the peel will be. The benefits of a TCA peel include:

  • Softening acne scars
  • Removing precancerous growths
  • Reducing wrinkles
  • Minimizing blemishes
  • Treating photoaging

TCA peels usually have a medium depth. This means the peel will remove the top layer of skin, as well as a small amount of the layer underneath. The depth of a TCA peel determines how strong the peel will be. However, the stronger the peel, the more likely you will experience side effects, so use caution when choosing a TCA peel.

Why a Medical Provider Should Perform Your Peel

While there are some at-home chemical peels available, we do not recommend them. Not only are they less effective, but they also come with a greater risk for side effects and complications. When performed by an inexperienced individual, chemical peels may have serious side effects, such as:

  • Scarring
  • Permanent changes in skin color
  • Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections
  • Heart problems
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney issues

A chemical peel is a medical procedure that should only be performed by a licensed medical provider. When performed correctly, a chemical peel may provide beautiful, long-lasting results. At AAD, we have a team of dermatologists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who are equipped with the necessary skills to perform several types of chemical peels.
