WHAT TO EXPECT

Mohs Micrographic Surgery Process

STEP 1

Examination and Anesthesia

Your surgeon will determine what cancerous tissue needs to be removed and apply local anesthesia.

STEP 2

Tissue Removal

Visible cancerous tissue is removed in very thin layers.

STEP 3

Tissue Analysis

Each layer is carefully examined under a microscope for the presence of cancer cells. Additional layers are removed and analyzed as necessary.

STEP 4

Repair

Your surgeon will carefully bandage or stitch the wound for healing.

Mohs Results

Mohs surgery spares as much healthy tissue as possible. In almost all cases, the skin heals nicely with a barely noticeable scar.

Who is a Candidate for Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer, the providers at Academic Alliance in Dermatology will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is best for you. In most cases, Mohs surgery is recommended for the following types of skin cancer:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Recurrent skin cancer
  • Skin cancer that has grown large or spread to nearby tissues
  • Skin cancer in cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas

While Mohs surgery is an effective treatment for skin cancer, it may not suit everyone. With a thorough evaluation, we can determine if Mohs surgery is the best treatment option for you. The sooner you receive treatment, the better your chances are for a successful outcome.

What Our Patients Are Saying

“I’ve had the opportunity to be under the care of Dr. David Sable for several years and appreciate his skill excising questionable skin anomalies associated with sun exposure. His support staff are competent and professional. I’ve recommended my family members to Academic Alliance and they have also been impressed with the medical advice and services.”

– Ralph M.

“The cancer was found during a routine visit. It was taken care of via surgery. The surgery was successful and the follow up visit showed no evidence of scaring on my face. The recommended full body check once a year really paid off.”

– Larry L.

“I’m 75 and the first time I’ve been to a dermatologist, I was very nervous not knowing what to expect. Dr. Lopez and her assistant were very Professional. I had 7 areas frozen and a biopsy on one. Dr. Lopez was thorough, I felt no pain at all. I really worried for no reason. My experience was awesome from the front desk to Dr. Lopez.”
