3 Common Pediatric Dermatology Conditions

When it comes to skin issues, infants and children are not exempt. Many children suffer from dermatological issues and must seek the treatment of a dermatologist to help alleviate their symptoms. Below are three of the most common pediatric dermatology conditions treated by the board-certified dermatologists at Academic Alliance in Dermatology:

Eczema

Eczema, medically known as atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition that can occur at any time in life. It often starts early in childhood and continues into early adulthood. Over half of infants with eczema grow out of the condition by the time they are a toddler, though it can flare up again throughout life. Eczema is a chronic condition, and while it cannot be cured, symptoms can be managed with topical creams and prescriptions.

Diaper Dermatitis

Diaper dermatitis, more commonly known as diaper rash, is not a condition in and of itself, but rather is dermatitis categorized by the location of the affected area. There are four types of diaper dermatitis, including:

  • Irritant contact dermatitis

  • Overgrowth of yeast or candida

  • Dermatitis characterized by an allergic reaction

  • Inflammatory skin condition

The most common type of diaper dermatitis is irritant contact dermatitis, caused by skin exposure to excrement for a long period of time. Symptoms of diaper rash include bright red or swollen patches of skin in area where the diaper was. Prolonged diaper rash can increase the baby’s risk of infection in the affected area.

Acne

During puberty and sometimes earlier, acne is extremely prevalent in adolescents due to the surge of hormones during this stage in life. Acne is not caused by things like diet or hygiene, however it can be exacerbated by those factors. Acne begins when pores or hair follicles in the skin become clogged with oily secretions known as sebum. The blockage becomes a blackhead or a white head. They can turn into red bumps and lead to permanent scarring. Your dermatologist can prescribe topical or oral acne treatment as well as treatment to alleviate acne scarring.

At AAD, our dermatologists are board-certified and have years of experience treating not just a variety of adult skin issues, but pediatric conditions as well. In fact, many of our dermatologists are specialized in pediatric care.
